Notes on Life 290322

Collective unconscious, term introduced by psychiatrist Carl Jung to represent a form of the unconscious (that part of the mind containing memories and impulses of which the individual is not aware) common to mankind as a whole and originating in the inherited structure of the brain.

(Britannica.com)

Isomorphism means that in the process of adapting to our surroundings, we behave in increasingly similar ways.

Status quo trap is the tendency to favor what already exists and information that confirms that choice.

Think of every exit as an entrance to somewhere else and develop a practice you can maintain and show up with consistently.

If you can work hard to get authentic in your interactions, you’ll not just fulfill your duty to be a messenger (in communication), but also your obligation to be yourself.

Picture the future you want then plan and work towards it. Live every day as a contribution towards that vision. (SRC)

Consider your single most important personal and professional priorities. Your other priorities should stem from these; organize and execute around them.(SRC)

At its core, a win-win approach is based on trust, an agreed-upon set of outcomes, and acceptance of those outcomes. Ultimately, everyone involved should benefit from the outcome.(SRC)

Active listening is critical to productive relations. If you listen with the intent to understand, you will engender openness and trust and this will lead to a better outcome.(SRC)

Synergy involves balancing individual differences to create new paradigms of thought and action. Experts working together yield better results than the same experts working independently. (SRC)

Your habits will be most effective if you take time for self-care and renewal. As you work on each habit, your experience with these habits will then deepen.(SRC)

36000 is the number of visual messages human eye can register in one hour. 15000 is the number of words the average adult can read per hour. So visual communication is better.

NLG, a subfield of artificial intelligence (AI), is a software process that automatically transforms data into plain-English content. The technology can actually tell a story – exactly like that of a human analyst – by writing the sentences and paragraphs for you. NLG is one of the fastest growing technologies being adopted in the enterprise. There many use-cases for NLG, but where it is seen to be most effective is when deployed to automate time-intensive data analysis and reporting activities.

Narrow AI is created to solve one given problem, for example, a chatbot. Artificial general intelligence (AGI) is a theoretical application of generalized artificial intelligence into any domain, solving any problem that requires AI.

Moments of epiphany tend to come in the unlikeliest of circumstances. For Ian Goodfellow, PhD in machine learning, it came while discussing artificial intelligence with friends at a Montreal pub one late night in 2014. What came out of that fateful meeting was “generative adversarial network” or (GAN), an innovation that AI experts have described as the “coolest idea in deep learning in the last 20 years.”

Goodfellow’s friends were discussing how to use AI to create photos that looked realistic. The problem they faced was that current AI techniques and architectures, deep learning algorithms and deep neural networks, are good at classifying images, but not very good at creating new ones.

Goodfellow came up with the idea of a new technique in which different neural networks challenged each other to learn to create and improve new content in a recursive process. That same night, he coded and tested his idea and it worked. With the help of fellow scholars and alums from his alma mater, Université de Montréal, Goodfellow later completed and compiled his work into a famous and highly-cited whitepaper titled “Generative Adversarial Nets.”

Notes on Communication 040122

Six things to do before seeking feedback: 1. Understand what you are looking for, 2. Ask immediately, 3. Pose specific questions, 4. Ask for examples, 5. Seek the opinion of colleagues, and 6. Ask more frequently in the virtual environment.

Tell a story that matters to your audience and make sure it fits the larger context. Other tips for successful storytelling include being humble and sharing anecdotes to make it more human.

For conscious communication, don't mask your feelings. Instead of saying, Where were you?, say, I felt hurt that you did not tell me where you had gone?

Saying 'You are an idiot' is quite different from 'You are acting like an idiot.'

'You can not follow something blindly', is a statement that hurts a blind person. Because it suggests blindness means diminished intelligence. We should be conscious about how we communicate about disabilities.

Keep the information flowing. Unlike other resources, information when shared gets increased value.

"Listening is an act of love. It is an all-body activity."

Over-communication is better than under-communication.

Reverting does not mean replying back. It means going back to an earlier status.

Effectiveness in communication is determined by the result of communication.

Listening is like pouring tea in a cup. If the cup is clean and empty, listening is best. But if cup is kept upside down, tea will go waste, that is when we are not paying attention at all. If the cup is cracked, tea leaks out. That is when we are trying to listen but our attention is out of control. Or when the cup has something in it already. That is when we are full of toxic certainty,

Radio is the theatre of the mind.

Podcasting is a mix of reading books and watching cinema. Audio helps you avoid reading, and visualize what you are listening.
