Notes on Givers and Takers 110522

Conventional wisdom has taught that it is important to be assertive and aggressive to climb the ladder of success. Author Adam Grant argues quite the opposite in Give and Take. Learn how generosity generates its own kind of equity and drives success, in today’s increasingly interconnected and interdependent world.

In the workplace, there are those who take, those who practice equal reciprocity, and those who give. Consider changing your giving and taking style to best support your success.

Takers are people who only pay attention to their own needs. Learn to identify takers and avoid them whenever possible.

Matchers are restricted in their networks, personal growth and leadership development. You can avoid these limitations by shifting to a giving approach.

Givers often fill the tops of organizations. To become a giver, put other people's needs above your own, dedicating time, attention, and support without expectations of reciprocity.

The strength of a giver lies in the interconnectedness of their teams. Consider hiring not just the giver but also their team.

A humble style of communication helps givers sell, persuade and negotiate. Show vulnerability in your conversation to help earn others' trust.

Givers who give too much can suffer burnout. Care for yourself as well as for others by giving in measured amounts and seeking help when needed.

Takers prove damaging in both professional and personal spaces as they are too focused themselves and could not care less about anyone or anything else.

Contrary to conventional wisdom, Adam Grant argues in favor of the non-assertive communication style displayed by givers, once they establish their competence.

Notes on the Book- The Toyota Way

Toyota’s success measures tell the external story and results of its unique culture and continuously evolving approach.

Toyota’s founding fathers accomplished extraordinary successes through tinkering and invention, a passion for always making things better, a principled approach to work, an eye for detail, and a zeal to eliminate wasted effort

The Toyota Production System, or TPS, is an integrated company approach that incorporates philosophy, process, people, and problem-solving.

Individuals can begin to learn and apply an understanding of systems thinking to take a holistic view of their own work and life.

One of the operational elements of the Toyota Production System is the concept of “one-piece flow.” how people and processes are interconnected through a slow, steady operating model, attention to eliminating waste, and empowerment of each contributor.

Continuous process flow can be applied in everyday work by considering core principles of continuous improvement and efficiency. Toyota’s production process has many inter-related components

Toyota instills a mindset that helps each individual contribute to efficiency and effectiveness

The concept of Jidoka is an important element of Toyota’s production process, which empowers workers to stop the assembly line if they notice a quality defect.

By incorporating color, clear signs, visual signals and principles of cleanliness and order, Toyota creates a production environment that allows workers to focus on their tasks and on problem-solving.

By building its leadership principles from the start with each employee, Toyota builds consistency and shared mindsets. these principles including observation, accountability, thinking, and continuous improvement.

Toyota’s approach is derived from the philosophies and mindsets of Toyota’s founders and Japanese culture. including a sense of purpose, collaboration, interconnectedness, observation, and mindfulness.

Toyota’s scientific problem-solving approach is one of the core aspects of its culture. the core aspects of this approach, including gathering evidence, applying the “Five Whys” of root cause analysis, testing ideas, and the Plan, Do, Check, Act model.

The problem-solving mindset of Toyota is one that can be applied in everyday life. use a structured approach in any problem-solving situation, get clear about the situation, map processes, form and test hypotheses, and implement solutions.

The Toyota Way includes many examples of ways to modify personal and organizational behaviors for long-term, transformational success.

Notes on the Book- Measure What matters

It's important to re-assess your goals over time. Keep a keen eye on trends and market changes and make adjustments as necessary.

Risks are best taken keeping an organization's core capabilities in mind. Make sure you consider the available data and operate within your company's unique skill set.

Keep your goals simple and clear. Clear objectives are more motivating and sharable.

Invest time in understanding what motivates your individual teammates. Understanding their unique motivations can help you align their incentives with your organization's objectives.

Set goals that seem beyond reach. As a leader, your job is always to look towards what comes next, no matter how daunting or impractical.

People perform best when they feel valued. Offer feedback continuously and generously and encourage opinions and self-designed performance plans.

From OKRs-Objectives and Key Results to CFRs-Conversations, Feedback & Recognition, John Doerr crystallizes the crux of his learnings under Intel CEO Andy Grove and his management style

John Doerr illustrates with the example of Hewlett Packard and how a misstep caused it to falter. That it rose from the ashes to rule again is the positive spin.

Using the example of Google, John Doerr shows what makes companies wager on decisions that seem to put their future at stake. It is based on a series of calculated risk-taking that leans on the organization's core capabilities.

Notes on Management 110422

As rational beings go, humans can be pretty irrational, found psychology professor Dan Ariely. Weighing in options while making decisions, we don't always act reasonably. How else do we explain wardrobes full of clothes we are never going to wear or buying things we don't need?

We are all freeloaders, analyzes Dan Ariely. At the mention of the word “free” our sense of judgment goes out the window and we lose all rationale to run after something that we perceive as valuable while costing us nothing.

A decoy is an option designed to drive you toward a particular choice. When considering a decision, be aware of the decoy option and make sure you make the decision you want.

The anchor data point in your decision making is the initial point against which you judge other options. Assess options based on merit rather than the anchor.

Often, you adopt a new behavior because other people are doing it. When confronted with a new option, question its relative merit; consider consequences and alternatives.

Free offers can lead to irrational purchase decisions. The cost of that decision in time, quality, effort, or space may be greater than money.

Non-cash rewards can be more motivating than money. Bring social norms—respect, time and appreciation—into your profession or work place to inspire trust and goodwill.

Procrastination is natural to the human condition. To overcome it, impose consequences for inaction and external accountability.

Pursuing every option is irrational and unproductive. To maxmize productivity, make decisions quickly and move forward.

Notes on Management 060422

Many organizations are able to define their strategic goals, but they’re unaware of how to execute those goals. The 4 Disciplines of Execution offers a proven set of practices that empowers leaders to execute their most important goals in the face of distractions.

The 4 Disciplines of Execution offers precise rules that help transform strategy into action at all levels of an organization. The first of these is to focus on ‘Wildly Important Goals. The second discipline of execution hovers around finding a few key activities that will bring maximum impact.Once you have identified your Wildly Important Goal and found the lead measures to achieve it, you need to ensure engagement. The last, but far from the least, discipline of execution centers around practices that drive accountability and follow through.

It is important to get your team’s buy-in to reap the advantages of the four disciplines of execution

According to the authors of The 4 Disciples of Execution, weekly review sessions for your Wildly Important Goals are critical for success. But these need to be fast-paced, following a set agenda and they must be actionable

The everyday chaos that surrounds a team can cause distractions and failure. To produce results, laser focus your team on the one or two Wildly Important Goals.

You can measure how well your team is meeting its goals in lead and lag indicators. Focus on your lead indicators but pay attention to lag indicators as well.

Make sure all team members know if they are winning or losing. Create a simple scoreboard that is visible to team members at all times.

Accountability means every team member makes a personal commitment to winning. Weekly W.I.G. review meetings can help you check accountability and take actions to move the lead measures.

To ensure that your weekly W.I.G. review sessions are effective, structure the session in three parts: reporting, reviewing the scoreboard, and checking that lead are positively moving the lag measures.

Educate your teams about the four disciplines. Implement the disciplines in stages from clarifying the principles and seeking commitment to launching, adapting, and optimizing performance.

Misinterpreting the W.I.G. framework can lead to pitfalls. Be sure to recognize the W.I.G. approach as a framework, pick strategic W.I.G.s, follow your lead measures, and use scoreboards appropriately.

Ace the most difficult negotiations by gauging your skillsets correctly and not transferring power to your opponent. Avoid mistakes such as overestimating their ability and imitating negative behavior. Instead, urge yourself on, listen and ask questions, and go into the meeting well-prepared.

A story that supports your brand makes the customer the hero. Determine your customer's greatest need and let that drive your narrative.

Every story needs a villain. Define your customer's main obstacle and make it the villain that your brand helps them overcome

Make your brand the guide in the story, not the hero. Offer your customer a way forward with empathy and confidence.

Customers trust the guide with a plan. Present your customer with a plan for achieving what they want and mitigating risk.

Challenge your customers to take action. Give them a direct or transitional call to action that moves toward closing the sale.

Customers need to know what's at stake if they don't buy your product. Show your customer how their vulnerability to key risks increases without your product.

Your customer needs a happy ending. Finish your brand story with a picture of exactly how your brand will help them achieve what they want—a win, a change, a holistic experience.
(Emeritus Insights on book Building a Storybrand by Donald Miller)

A fear appeal is a persuasive message that attempts to arouse fear in order to divert behavior through the threat of impending danger or harm. It presents a risk, presents the vulnerability to the risk, and then may, or may not suggest a form of protective action.(Wikipedia)

 Three Rs of apology are

Remorse
Responsibility
Repair

The peak–end rule is a psychological heuristic in which people judge an experience largely based on how they felt at its peak and at its end, rather than based on the total sum or average of every moment of the experience. The effect occurs regardless of whether the experience is pleasant or unpleasant. (Wikipedia)

To assign specific roles to teams, companies use RACI model. That is those who are
Responsible
Accountable
Consulted
Informed.

When it comes to listening, there are five major areas of focus or listening intentions,
recalling details,
understanding the big picture,
evaluating the content,
attending to subtle cues, and
empathizing with the speaker.

when it comes to listening challenges, five specific ones make the top of the list,
mental filters,
multitasking,
distraction by delivery,
information overload, and
inappropriate response

Decision fatigue is “the idea that after making many decisions, your ability to make more and more decisions over the course of a day becomes worse,” said Dr. MacLean, a psychiatrist. “The more decisions you have to make, the more fatigue you develop and the more difficult it can become.”
